With its tree-lined streets, lakes and canals, New Town at St. Charles is unlike any ordinary neighborhood. Resulting from a weeklong initial design workshop in February of 2003, New Town was planned to combine the ideals of a classic American town and a modern community. The result?

New Town: Description and Summary

New Town traces its roots to town founder Greg Whittaker, an architect and real estate developer, and town architect Tim Busse. Whittaker was inspired by his visits to the walkable community in Seaside, Florida, and identified a plot of bean fields and sod farms in northern St. Charles where a development could begin to take shape. The rest, as they say, is history.

With a nod to the New Urbanism design movement, New Town at St. Charles seeks to balance the arrangement of family homes with parks, waterways, open public spaces and amenities such as grocery stores and coffee shops. Today, the area consists of five distinct neighborhoods joined by a main square on the town’s center island. To facilitate the community’s distinct outdoor lifestyle, homes in the area typically feature a detached garage located behind the home. Other notable architectural features include front entry and upper-level porches, low-pitched roofs and clean, symmetrical lines.
